Key takeaways
- Search Console shows how people find you in Google search; GA4 shows what they do on your site; your Business Profile shows calls and directions from Maps.
- Mark phone clicks and form submissions as key events in GA4, or you will be measuring traffic instead of customers.
- Linked Search Console data shows up in GA4 about 48 hours after Google collects it and covers at most 16 months.
- Tag your Business Profile website link so visits from Maps are counted separately from other search traffic.
- In Naples, compare each month with the same month last year, because season swings can hide or exaggerate real progress.
Three tools, three different questions
Owners often expect one dashboard to tell the whole story. In practice, three free Google tools each answer a different question:
| Tool | The question it answers | Main numbers |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | How do people find my website in Google search? | Clicks, impressions, click-through rate, average position, search queries |
| Google Analytics 4 (GA4) | What do visitors do once they arrive? | Sessions by channel, engagement, key events such as calls and forms |
| Google Business Profile performance | What do people do with my Maps listing? | Calls, website clicks, direction requests, bookings, profile views |
None of them is complete alone. Search Console never sees your phone ringing, GA4 does not see searches that never clicked through, and the Business Profile report does not know what happened after someone reached your site. Used together, they give a fair picture.
Setting up Google Search Console
- Add your website as a property. A domain property covers every version of your site (with and without www, http and https) and is verified by adding a record at your domain registrar. If that is beyond you, a URL-prefix property verified through your website platform works too.
- Submit your sitemap. Most website platforms generate one automatically. Adding it helps Google find your pages.
- Check the Pages report. It shows which pages Google has indexed and which it has not, with reasons.
- Open the Performance report. This is where you will spend most of your time.
The Performance report shows four numbers. Clicks are visits from Google search. Impressions count how often your site appeared in results. CTR, or click-through rate, is clicks divided by impressions. Average position is the average of your topmost result's position. Google notes that the newest data can be preliminary, so do not judge the last day or two. Google also says traffic from its AI features, such as AI Overviews, is counted here under the Web search type.
A useful side effect: verifying your site in Search Console with the same account as your Business Profile can make profile verification faster.
Setting up GA4 and key events
Install GA4 through your website platform or Google Tag Manager, then make sure it records what matters. GA4 counts many interactions as events; the ones that represent real business are called key events (Google's newer name for conversions).
For most local businesses, those are:
- Phone clicks: taps on your tel: links from mobile visitors.
- Form submissions: contact, quote or booking forms, ideally tracked by a thank-you page or a confirmed submit.
- Email clicks, if customers commonly email you.
- Booking or purchase completions, if you take them online.
To mark an event as key, go to Admin, then Data display, then Events, and mark it as a key event. Standard properties allow up to 30 key events, far more than a small business needs. Fewer is better: three or four meaningful actions keep reports readable.
Test each one by completing the action yourself and checking that it appears in GA4's real-time report.

Ask the team →Linking Search Console and GA4
Linking puts search data inside GA4 so you can see which landing pages bring search visitors and what those visitors do next. Requirements and limits, according to Google's Analytics help:
- You need Editor access in GA4 and must be a verified owner of the Search Console property.
- One GA4 web data stream links to one Search Console property.
- Linking adds two reports: Google Organic Search Queries and Google Organic Search Traffic. They may need to be published in your report library before they appear in the menu.
- Search Console data appears in GA4 about 48 hours after Search Console collects it.
- The linked reports go back a maximum of 16 months.
- Only a few GA4 dimensions, such as landing page, device and country, combine with Search Console metrics.
Because of the 16-month limit, export your key numbers to a spreadsheet every month. That gives you a permanent record for year-over-year comparisons, which matter a great deal in a seasonal market.
Business Profile performance and tagged links
For many Naples businesses, the Google Business Profile produces more calls than the website does. Its performance report shows calls (taps on the call button, which require a phone number on the profile), website clicks, direction requests, bookings made through a connected provider and how people found the profile. One gap to know about: Whitespark and other practitioners note that a desktop user who copies your number and dials it is not counted as a call.
By default, visits from your profile to your website blend into GA4's general search traffic. Fix that by adding UTM parameters, short tracking tags, to the website link on your profile, for example utm_source=google, utm_medium=organic and utm_campaign=gbp. Keep the values lowercase and keep the medium as organic so GA4 still files the visits under Organic Search, while the campaign tag lets you separate them. Our Google Business Profile setup guide covers where the link lives.
Call tracking basics
For service businesses, the phone is often the main conversion, and none of the free tools hear the conversation. Call tracking fills that gap. A call tracking service gives you forwarding numbers that ring your normal line, records which source each call came from and can record calls with consent.
- On your website, tracking numbers can swap in automatically depending on how a visitor arrived, so search, ads and email each get credit.
- On your Business Profile, a common approach is to use a tracking number as the primary phone and keep your main business line as an additional number, so the profile still connects to the number found across your other listings.
- On printed materials, a separate number per channel shows which flyers or vehicle wraps actually ring.
If you use tracking numbers, keep your main number consistent across directories. Our guide on where to list your Naples business explains why consistent listings matter.
Which numbers matter, and which do not
Watch closely: calls and form leads from organic search and the Business Profile; Business Profile direction requests if you have a storefront; clicks from search to your service pages; impressions for searches that include your services and areas.
Watch, but do not obsess: average position, which blends many searches and locations into one number and swings easily; total sessions, which include visitors who will never be customers; and single-keyword rankings checked from your own office, which distance makes misleading, as our guide to how Google Maps rankings work explains.
Mostly ignore: bounce-style metrics on contact pages (a visitor who calls and leaves did exactly what you wanted), traffic from other countries and any tool's proprietary authority score. None of them pay the bills.
A monthly report template
One page, the same layout every month, filled in from the three tools. Compare each row with the previous month and with the same month last year.
| Metric | Where to find it | This month | Last month | Same month last year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Calls from Business Profile | Business Profile performance | |||
| Website clicks from Business Profile | Business Profile performance or tagged GA4 campaign | |||
| Direction requests | Business Profile performance | |||
| Organic search clicks | Search Console Performance | |||
| Organic search impressions | Search Console Performance | |||
| Key events from organic search (calls, forms) | GA4, filtered to Organic Search | |||
| Tracked calls from organic and profile | Call tracking dashboard | |||
| New Google reviews and average rating | Business Profile | |||
| Top 5 landing pages from search | GA4 Google Organic Search Traffic |
Add a short notes line: what changed this month, such as new pages, a moved office or a storm closure, so future you can explain the bumps.
Reading the numbers in a seasonal market
Naples is not a steady market. Many businesses see a sharp rise from roughly January through April and a slower summer, and storm closures can knock out a week or more in the fall. A drop from March to July usually says more about the calendar than about your SEO.
- Compare each month with the same month last year whenever you have the data.
- Look at the trend over a full quarter before reacting to one month.
- Note closures and hour changes in your report so a dip is not mistaken for a problem.
- Watch impressions as an early signal. They often rise before clicks and calls follow.
Common measurement mistakes
- No key events. Without calls and forms marked as key events, you can only measure traffic, not leads.
- Comparing GA4 and Search Console numbers directly. They count different things; clicks and sessions will never match exactly.
- Judging the last two days. Search Console's newest data can be preliminary, and linked data lags about 48 hours in GA4.
- Untagged Business Profile link. Maps visits get lost in general search traffic.
- Relying only on stored history. Linked reports reach back 16 months at most, so keep monthly exports.
- Counting your own visits. Exclude your office traffic or at least be aware of it.
- Accounts owned by someone else. Make sure the business owns the GA4 property, Search Console and the Business Profile, and adds helpers as users. If you would rather have someone set this up and report on it monthly, our local SEO service includes it.
Questions
How do I know if my SEO is working?
Look at leads, not only traffic: calls and directions from your Business Profile, plus calls and form submissions from organic search marked as key events in GA4. Compare each month with the same month last year, and watch Search Console impressions as an early sign that visibility is growing.
What is the difference between GA4 and Search Console?
Search Console shows how your site performs in Google search before anyone clicks: impressions, clicks, average position and the searches involved. GA4 shows what visitors do after they arrive, including key events such as calls and form fills. Linking them lets you see both sides in GA4.
Why does GA4 show different numbers than Search Console?
They measure different things. Search Console counts clicks from Google search results, while GA4 counts sessions on your site, which can be affected by consent banners, ad blockers and visitors who leave before the page loads. Expect the numbers to be close in trend but never identical.
What is a key event in GA4?
A key event is an action you have marked as important, such as a phone-number tap or a form submission. It is Google's newer name for what used to be called a conversion. Standard GA4 properties allow up to 30, but most local businesses need only three or four.
How do I track phone calls from Google?
Your Business Profile performance report counts taps on the call button, though not desktop users who copy and dial your number. On your website, track taps on your phone link as a key event in GA4. For full source tracking and call details, a call tracking service with forwarding numbers fills the gaps.
How far back can I see Search Console data in GA4?
Linked Search Console reports in GA4 cover a maximum of 16 months, and new data appears about 48 hours after Search Console collects it. Export your key numbers monthly to keep a longer history for year-over-year comparisons.
